Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – A stray bullet landed within feet of a mother and her 2-year-old child while the child was riding a tricycle in the driveway of their home, and police are investigating. On Monday, July 20, 2015 around 3:45 p.m., Mt. Juliet Police was notified by a complainant of a stray bullet landing in her driveway, located in the 1800 block of Wiltshire Drive.

The complainant stated to the responding officer that her 2-year-old child was riding a tricycle in their driveway, while her and family members watched around 3:35 p.m. on Monday. While watching the 2-year-old, the complainant heard a distant gun shot, saw an object strike a nearby power line, and then saw the object land in her driveway within feet from her. The object that landed in the driveway was discovered to be a bullet commonly used in a handgun.

It is believed that the stray bullet came from recreational shooting or an accidental discharge, and it was shot from a lengthy distance away from the complainant’s address. Shooting or firing any projectile is prohibited by Mt. Juliet City Code.

Police encourage residents to report if they hear loud gunshots near their homes so the location can be investigated.
