Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Mt. Juliet Police officers, firefighters, and public works personnel responded Tuesday evening to numerous flooding incidents caused by a powerful storm that moved through the community.
Around 8:56 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, Mt. Juliet’s Advanced Response Communications Center (ARCC) began receiving calls about flooding conditions requiring an emergency response. Heavy rainfall caused streams and creeks to rise quickly, creating flash flooding in low-lying areas and making several roadways impassable.
By monitoring the storm’s impact on nearby communities as it approached Mt. Juliet, staffing levels were increased to ensure officers were ready to respond. Officers responded quickly as calls began coming into the ARCC. Mt. Juliet Public Works teams also responded to assist with road closures and other flooding-related needs.
Officers responded to 15 incidents involving flooding conditions and impassable roadways.
The most serious incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Lebanon Road near Matterhorn Drive. A Nissan Altima driven by a 26-year-old woman became disabled in fast-moving water that rose to the vehicle’s windows. An officer entered the hazardous conditions, removed the woman from the vehicle, and carried her to safety. Thankfully, she was not injured.
Around 10:30 p.m., Mt. Juliet firefighters responded to a home in the 2900 block of West Division Street that was surrounded by deep water. Firefighters deployed a rescue raft and safely evacuated three adults, three children, and an infant at the residents’ request. MJPD officers then assisted the family with obtaining accommodations at a nearby hotel.
There are no current road closures.
No injuries were reported within the Mt. Juliet city limits.
The Department is grateful for the coordinated work of ARCC operators, police officers, firefighters, and Public Works personnel who responded quickly to protect residents throughout the storm. Drivers are reminded never to enter a flooded roadway because water depth, roadway damage, and the strength of the current can be difficult to determine.
