Mt. Juliet Police Community Service Officer Response Truck Hit While Assisting a Disabled Motorist on I-40

MJPD July 6, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – A Mt. Juliet Police Community Service Officer response truck was hit while an officer was assisting a disabled motorist on Interstate 40. Today around 3:05 p.m., the officer was summoned to a disabled motorist after a wrecker operator contacted the department and requested traffic assistance to bring attention to the incident and warn other motorists to move over. Unfortunately, moments after the officer arrived on the scene, with emergency lights active and an enhanced warning message board active, the response truck was hit from behind.

The officer was inside at the moment of impact and was able to regain steering control of the truck after the impact sent it traveling towards other lanes of travel. The officer and the motorist of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer has since been released from the hospital and is expected to recover fully.

“Our staff members selflessly place themselves in harms way daily to serve, protect, and assist our community members to ensure they are taken care of,” stated Chief James Hambrick. “I’m very grateful that no one was seriously injured during this incident.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to investigate the crash, which is department policy, anytime a Mt. Juliet police vehicle is involved in a collision.

Community Service Officers are trained civilian staff members who respond to incidents that do not require a police officer and assist police officers at incidents with traffic incident management. Their response trucks are equipped with high-visibility, reflective graphics, emergency warning lights, and enhanced, elevated warning message boards.

Security & Traffic Control Plan For Mt. Juliet’s July 4th Firework Celebration Announced

MJPD June 28, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – A musical Fourth of July Celebration will launch at 9:00 p.m. from the Mt. Juliet Little League Ball Fields on Lebanon Road. To ensure the event is safe and enjoyable for everyone, Mt. Juliet Police and Fire will be on site. The firework presentation, presented by the City of Mt. Juliet and 94FM – The Fish, will begin around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 4th, 2021 and launch from the ball fields.

Premium, excellent viewing for the fireworks will be at the ball fields, where there will be a $10 parking fee per vehicle that benefits the Mt. Juliet League Baseball/Softball. Good views also expand out to area parking lots near the Lebanon Road and N. Mt. Juliet Road intersection. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for a good viewing location and tune their FM radios to 94.1 as the firework display will be to music.

Interactive Viewing Area Map:

Mt. Juliet’s public safety teams are expecting large attendance and increased traffic. Safety is always a top priority, and many police officers will be present during the event for patrols and traffic control. With any significant event, attendees should always be vigilant for suspicious activity. If anything suspicious is spotted, attendees are encouraged to say something and call police. To contact the police department’s non-emergency line, attendees can dial 311. Also, the Fire Department of Mt. Juliet will have extra firefighters on hand near the firework launch site.

A traffic plan has been established, and advanced traffic signals will adapt to the increased traffic. In addition, officers will be directing traffic at some signals to prioritize motorists leaving the show.

A second fireworks show will also occur on July 4th at the Circle P Ranch on W. Division Street near E. Main Street and is presented by the Circle P Ranch and Needham’s Nursery. They have contracted with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department to provide traffic control at the event parking location, and Mt. Juliet Police Officers will also be in the area to monitor traffic and assist if needed.

Please remember that our roadways will see an increase in traffic during the events, so minor delays should be expected. Personal fireworks, alcoholic beverages, barbecue grills, and parking on roadway shoulders and medians are prohibited.

Mt. Juliet Police Remind Residents of Firework Safety and City Ordinances

MJPD June 21, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – The Mt. Juliet Police Department is reminding residents to be careful while discharging fireworks in order to avoid injuries and noise violations as Independence Day approaches.

Fireworks are beautiful, but they can be very dangerous if they are not used safely. It is imperative that fireworks be handled with care to avoid serious burns, eye damage, and even life-threatening injuries. Premature denotation and misuse of fireworks are responsible for many burn injuries every year, which all could be avoided with proper and safe handling. Safety should be everyone’s priority, and parents should always supervise juveniles who are using fireworks. The Mt. Juliet Police Department urges residents to be careful, follow safety precautions, and abide by city ordinances during their holiday celebrations.

In Mt. Juliet, it is unlawful to sell or use fireworks in the city limits except from June 20th through July 5th and December 10th through January 2nd. During this holiday season, fireworks cannot be discharged or used between the hours of 10:00PM – 10:00AM. In addition, fireworks cannot be sold or given to any person under the age of 18. It is permissible for juveniles to use fireworks only if a parent is supervising the activity. Failure to comply with Mt. Juliet’s City Code regulating fireworks could result in a fine.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these common sense safety tips for using consumer fireworks in the hopes that injuries can be greatly reduced:

  • Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise juveniles if they are using fireworks.
  • Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.
  • Fireworks should only be used outdoors.
  • Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
  • Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.
  • Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can be deadly
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

And note these special safety tips, if using sparklers:

  • Always remain standing while using sparklers.
  • Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers.
  • Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time.
  • Never throw sparklers.
  • Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out. Be sure to drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water.
  • Teach children not to wave sparklers, or run, while holding sparklers.

Enjoy your time with your friends and loved ones. Everyone at the Mt. Juliet Police Department wishes you a happy and safe Independence Day.

TBI Investigating Incident, Per Department Protocol, After Man Passes Away Following Mt. Juliet Police Response

MJPD June 15, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Yesterday evening, around 5:30 p.m., officers responded to an incident at a home on W. Division St. after a distraught female called 911 claiming an unknown man was in her home, who was sweating profusely, destroying property, and not speaking clearly.

Officers arrived to find an adult male with indications of a dangerous substance overdose and impairment. As they worked to help the male, he became combative towards two officers, who used compliance techniques in an effort to gain control, which included brief drive stun of a Taser to the leg. The male stopped being combative, and officers were able to handcuff him. While handcuffed, an officer noticed the male was not breathing, and officers immediately removed the handcuffs and began CPR. The adult male was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Per department protocol, the TBI was requested to investigate the incident. This is an active and ongoing investigation as TBI Special Agents work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence.

“Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this incident, including the family and loved ones of the deceased and the home’s residents who were impacted,” stated Police Chief James Hambrick. “To ensure our officers conducted themselves properly, I requested the TBI to conduct an independant investigation. In addition, incidents like this are traumatic for our police officers, and those involved have been placed on routine administrative leave. All are in my prayers.”

Detectives Investigating Overnight Armed Robbery of a Person & Unlocked Car Burglary along Devonshire Drive

MJPD April 15, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Detectives are investigating an armed robbery of a person and an unlocked car burglary incident that occurred overnight along Devonshire Drive. Around 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, an adult male victim, sitting at Devonshire Drive pond pier, was approached by two suspects, described as Black male teenagers wearing hooded sweatshirts, face masks, and armed with handguns. While pointing handguns at the victim, the suspects demanded items of value and told the victim to turn around and count while they ran away from the scene. After the suspects ran away, the victim heard a car start-up, which quickly fled towards Lebanon Road. Due to a blocked view, the victim could not describe the car. Thankfully, the victim was not injured.

An unlocked car burglary also occurred on Sunnyhilll Dr, a Devonshire Drive sidestreet, where a handgun and iPad were stolen. It is believed that the armed robbery suspects were out attempting unlocked car burglaries when they noticed the victim and took the opportunity to rob him.

Detectives hope residents in the area will review their surveillance camera footage to see if it captured valuable video to help in the investigation. The best time range to check video would be 11:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on 4/14/2021.

Detectives Seeking Community’s Help in Identifying Sexual Assault Suspect, Who Followed the Victim Home from Nashville to a Mt. Juliet Apartment

MJPD April 8, 2021

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Detectives are actively investigating a brutal sexual assault, where a suspect followed an adult female home from a Nashville club, forced his way into the victim’s apartment, and brutally sexually assaulted the victim. The suspect is also wanted in large thefts in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. During the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 6, an adult male suspect, pictured in attached surveillance images, arrived at the Deja Vu adult club at Church Street in Nashville and began behaving suspiciously. The suspect waited for the victim to leave, and he followed the victim to Mt. Juliet in a newer-model Maroon Cadillac CTS with no license plate. Once in Mt. Juliet, the suspect forced his way into the victim’s apartment at Providence Trail Apartments, where he struck the victim with a handgun, tied the victim up, and sexually assaulted the victim multiple times. He stole a large sum of cash and fled.

The suspect was also involved in grab-and-run thefts from the Kay Jewelers in Slidell, Louisiana, Fultondale, Alabama, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is possible that the suspect is committing crimes across the southeast and will continue to do so.

“Our detectives are aggressively investigating this awful crime. The suspect is a dangerous person, and he must be apprehended soon before there are more victims,” stated Chief James Hambrick. “If anyone thinks they know who the suspect is, they are urged to give us a call.”

Once identified, detectives will seek charges in the Mt. Juliet incident for four counts of Aggravated Rape, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Robbery, Especially Aggravated Burglary, and Aggravated Assault. To ensure justice for the victim and get the dangerous suspect off the streets, the Mt. Juliet Police Department offers a $2,000 reward for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest and conviction.
