Mt. Juliet Police Urge Parents to Keep Their Little Ghosts & Goblins Safe this Halloween

MJPD October 26, 2012

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Halloween can be a wicked good time for the whole family in Mt. Juliet as residents and children swamp the neighborhoods in creative costumes racing to see who can get the most candy. However, safety must be a top priority for parents and children. Amongst the spooky fun, it is important to make sure everyone stays safe and accounted for as they lurk to trick-or-treating. The Mt. Juliet Police Department is significantly increasing patrol officers and their presence in neighborhoods during the witching hours, but they need the help of residents so Mt. Juliet’s streets can be as safe as possible. Any unsafe mischief or driving behavior should immediately be reported to the police department so it can be stopped.

Trick-or-treating will be observed in Mt. Juliet on Wednesday, October 31st. The Mt. Juliet Police Department recommends trick-or-treating to start at 5:00PM and to stop by 10:00PM.

Parents can help by ensuring children are prepared for a safe Halloween. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children are four times more likely to be in a fatal pedestrian accident on Halloween than any other night of the year. There are several reasons why children are more likely to be hurt in pedestrian accidents, which include:

  • They often choose to take the shortest route, which may mean darting out between parked cars rather than take the safer route of crossing at corners.
  • They’re poor at evaluating potential traffic threats.
  • They’re more likely to disregard their peripheral vision and are less attentive of their street surroundings.
  • They have a tendency to believe they’re indestructible and are more likely to take risks.
  • They need to be told that some people driving cars will not slow down for them.
  • They can’t cross streets as rapidly as adults.
  • They may be distracted by other children’s costumes, behaviors, and home decorations.

In addition, to Mt. Juliet Police Department’s proactive patrols in the neighborhoods, they will also be out in force conducting sex offender compliance checks on Halloween. Under Tennessee law, any sex offender on parole or probation may not participate in any Halloween activity involving children. This would include leaving a porch light on, answering the door, or distributing candy. There are currently 12 registered sex offender living in the city limits of Mt. Juliet, and parents may access the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s website at http://www.tbi.tn.gov/ .

From everyone at Mt. Juliet Police, we wish you a safe Halloween. The department can be contacted at (615) 754-2550 (non-emergency) or 911 (emergency) to report any problems, observations, or safety concerns.

Local Wilson County Resident Donates Time & Love to Bring Children Comfort

MJPD October 24, 2012

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 24th, 2012

Local Wilson County Resident Donates Time & Love to Bring Children Comfort

Left to Right: Sgt. Chandler, Mollie Barr, Earl Barr, & Dep. Chief Hambrick

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Hoping to bring comfort to a child when needed most, Mollie Barr dedicates her retired life to building teddy bears of love for children involved in police-related situations. Wednesday, Mollie stopped by the Mt. Juliet Police Department with her husband Earl to deliver the furry critters for Police Officers to place in their patrol cars. Ready and prepared to serve, the bears will ride along with police officers during their tours of duty. During an officer’s shift, it is likely they will come across children involved in traumatic situations. The bears are available for the officer to give to the child, which will hopefully help put a smile on their face. When it comes to children, often the littlest things can have the biggest impact. Comforting a child at a time of crisis is a critical function of police officers.

“In situations requiring police intervention, they are often traumatic and negative,” said Deputy Chief James Hambrick, “Any little bit helps and Mollie’s bears will go far in a young child’s eyes. Our department is so thankful to have Mollie Barr in our community who wants to make a difference in a child’s life.

These are not normal stuffed animals. They are “Mollie’s Bears of Joy” because they are inspired from her heart with love. Mollie ensures they are in top-notch condition for a child who may need them. She spends her own money for the animals and even dresses them up.  Prior to giving the teddy bears to the police department, Mollie stated she gave them their mission to make a difference in a child’s life.

Mollie Barr shows off one of her bears inspired by her heart.

Car Thief Has Change of Heart & Confesses to Crimes

MJPD July 31, 2012

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 July 31st, 2012

Car Thief Has Change of Heart & Confesses to Crimes

Case: 12-54453

Date: July 31st, 2012

Time: 9:00AM

Location: 2425 N. Mt. Juliet Road (Mt. Juliet Police Headquarters)

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – After an early morning crime spree in Mt. Pleasant, Tenn, Austin Sparks had a change of heart and decided to confess about his crimes to Mt. Juliet Police. Austin, who is 20 and from Mt. Pleasant, stated to investigators that closely after midnight on Tuesday, July 31st he began his burglaries. All of the crimes took place across the street from Mt. Pleasant High School where Austin broke into around six unlocked cars. Looking for quick cash, Austin made away with spare change, extra keys, and phones. The sixth vehicle, a white work truck, that he came to was also unlocked and had the key in the ignition. That opportunity allowed him to steal the truck, and Austin took off with it and decided to drive to Mt. Juliet. While in Mt. Juliet, he sat and ate at McDonald’s by Interstate 40 and began to think about his criminal acts. The conscious decision of doing right or wrong consumed him, and he decided he would do right. His change of heart convinced him to drive the stolen vehicle to Mt. Juliet Police headquarters to turn himself in. He shocked the police department clerks at the front door when he walked in to confess his crimes.

“He walked in and told me that he had just stolen a car and it’s parked out front,” said clerk Kinnie Long. “It was shocking. He even stated that he felt bad for what he had done.”

Investigators met with Austin regarding his crime spree. When they asked him why he had a change of heart, he simply stated that he wanted to start doing right thing. Ultimately, Austin Sparks had to be arrested for his crimes. He was booked into the Wilson County Jail where he will wait for Mt. Pleasant authorities.

“It is very uncommon to have someone willingly confess to crimes,” said MJPD Sgt. Tyler Chandler. “It’s inspiring to see Austin have a change of heart. Hopefully he is now on the right track in life.”

 Time: 8:00AM

Location: 5001 Crossings Circle (Hampton Inn)

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – The Mt. Juliet Police Department has apprehended two burglars that have been targeting hotel vending machines throughout three Middle Tennessee counties over the past two months. This morning in Mt. Juliet, a Hampton Inn employee spotted one of the suspects attempting to break-in to a vending machine inside the hotel and called police. When police arrived on the scene they spotted one suspect attempting to flee on foot and found another waiting in the getaway vehicle. Both were quickly apprehended by responding officers.

On May 11th, 2012, around 8:00 a.m., Mt. Juliet Police Dispatch received a call from an employee at Hampton Inn in reference to someone actively breaking-in their soda machine. Prior to police arrival, the suspect, later identified as William Dangerfield, 29 of Lavergne, Tenn., noticed that the employee witnessed him committing the crime and ran from the hotel. Responding Mt. Juliet Police Officers were able to spot the suspect matching the hotel employee’s description running away from the hotel through an adjacent parking lot where he was taken into custody. Police then located a second suspect, identified as Nathan McEwen, 28 of Hohenwald, Tenn., sitting in their getaway vehicle parked at Hampton Inn where he apprehended.

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 9th, 2012

Mt. Juliet Police Discover Largest Marijuana Grow in City History

Case: 12-26856

Date: May 7th, 2012

Time: 11:00PM

Location: 1802 Meadow Glen Circle

Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Over one-million dollars of drugs headed for the streets of Middle Tennessee have been seized by the Mt. Juliet Police Department. A drug investigation that started in Nashville over an anonymous drug tip led the Mt. Juliet Police Department to the largest marijuana grow operation ever discovered inside the city. Members of the Mt. Juliet Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit executed a search warrant and shut down a marijuana grow operation inside a home at 1802 Meadow Glen Circle located in the Park Glen subdivision on Monday night. The Metro-Nashville Police Department relayed information to Mt. Juliet investigators, which prompted the search warrant.

Located during the search were over 775 marijuana plants, an additional 10 pounds of processed marijuana, 5 grams of powder cocaine, and thousands of dollars in equipment that was used to grow marijuana. The total street value of the processed marijuana is worth over $100,000.00, and the potential street value of the growing marijuana plants would have been well over $1,000,000.00 if all of the plants had been ready for cultivation. All the illegal drug material, two vehicles, and over $3,000.00 in cash have been seized so far in this on-going investigation.

“It is humbling to know that law enforcement neighbors can work together in a joint effort to root out drugs and their collateral public safety dangers throughout our communities,” stated Deputy Chief James Hambrick.

Two people were arrested and booked into the Wilson County Jail during the course of this investigation and have been charged with various drug related offenses.
