Mt. Juliet, Tenn. – Mt. Juliet’s Providence Marketplace mall and theater will be the site of a full-scale active shooter training exercise tomorrow night on Wednesday, October 14 from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The training will begin after the mall closes in order to not disrupt businesses in and around the site.
Participants in the training exercise will deal with an active shooter situation inside the theater and outside in the open-air mall environment. Emergency responders will rehearse their response and mitigation efforts to a mass casualty, active-shooter scenario during the training.
“It is so beneficial for emergency responders to rehearse what they learn in training, and the active shooter training exercise will allow us to evaluate our response,” said Police Chief James Hambrick. “If our community ever has to deal with such a tragic incident, I want to be confident that we can provide the best possible response.”
Coordinated by Mt. Juliet Police Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Wilson County Emergency Management Agency, and Mt. Juliet Fire Department will all be participating in the exercise. Prior to this planned exercise, the involved agencies have been participating in workshops and tabletop drills. After the exercise, everyone involved will have an additional workshop to address any shortcomings that are discovered.
The training exercise has been scheduled to not interfere with normal mall operations, and department leadership has been coordinating the training with mall and theater management. The public should expect to see a large number of emergency responders in the area during the event. A large amount of staff will be present to ensure the training area remains safe and secure.
